Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in the world. Located in southern Tanzania, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982 thanks to its rich wildlife and unspoiled nature. Covering about 50,000 km², plus buffer zones, it is even larger than Denmark. Though it lies far from the northern safari circuit, it offers a quieter and more exclusive experience.
The park is home to lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, and large herds of buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests. You may also see endangered black rhinos and rare East African wild dogs, along with impalas, hartebeests, waterbucks, sable antelopes, elands, and bushbucks. Elephant numbers were once very high but declined due to past poaching.
With over 445 recorded bird species, Nyerere is also a top destination for bird lovers. Kingfishers, pelicans, African skimmers, fish eagles, bee-eaters, hornbills, and many migratory birds can be seen along the rivers and lakes.
Nyerere is one of the few parks in Tanzania that offers both boat safaris and guided walking safaris. A boat trip along the Rufiji River is especially memorable, with hippos, crocodiles, rich birdlife, and beautiful sunsets.
