Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is one of southern Tanzania’s most beautiful wildlife destinations. Its wide open plains are often compared to the Serengeti. The park borders the Selous Game Reserve, and together they form a unique ecosystem rich in wildlife. Mikumi is also known for its tree-climbing lions, which are seen here more often than in many other parks.

The park is home to a wide variety of animals, and many visitors come hoping to spot four of the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Hippos can be seen in mud pools about 5 km north of the main entrance, surrounded by different water birds.

The Mkata Floodplain is the best area for game viewing. Herds of zebra, wildebeest, impala, and buffalo move across the plains, while lions watch from termite mounds or trees. Giraffes and elephants gather near the Mkata River, and the area is one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to see eland, as well as greater kudu and sable antelope.

Mikumi is also a paradise for bird lovers, with more than 400 bird species, including open-billed storks, lilac-breasted rollers, bateleur eagles, and many seasonal European migrants.
